Basic Classification of Electronic Components and Application in SMT
Electronic components are the core foundation of circuit functions in SMT mounting and PCBA processing. Understanding component classification, packaging features and application characteristics is essential for process control, quality judgment and production arrangement.
According to packaging and mounting methods, common SMT components are divided into three categories:
- Passive ComponentsIncluding resistors, capacitors, inductors, magnetic beads and crystals.They feature simple structure, large consumption and no polarity. Common sizes include 0402 and 0201 miniature packages. They are widely used for current limiting, filtering and voltage stabilization in all electronic products.
- Active Semiconductor ComponentsIncluding diodes, transistors, MOSFETs, IC chips, single-chip microcomputers and processors.With polar design and multiple pins, they undertake signal processing, operation control and power management. These components require high mounting accuracy and strict reflow temperature control.
- Connectors & Structural ComponentsIncluding pin headers, sockets, USB ports, switches and card slots.Most of them are relatively large in size, used for board-to-board connection and human-computer interaction. They require precise alignment and good mechanical strength.
Different components have different process requirements in SMT production. Miniature parts are easy to have offset and tombstoning; precision ICs are sensitive to high temperature; connectors are easy to be damaged during placement. Reasonable stencil design, mounting parameters and reflow profile are necessary to maintain high yield.
